The most important youth handball tournament in southern Europe started playing this Thursday at the Espai Can Prat and the Corró d’Avall Sports Pavilion.
Les Franqueses del Vallès is once again hosting the competitions of the 24th Granollers Cup 2024, the most important youth handball tournament in southern Europe. The sporting event began with an opening ceremony at the Porxada Square in Granollers, attended by the mayor of Les Franqueses, Juan Antonio Corchado. The event kicked off a competition that has record numbers this year, with 468 teams and more than 7,000 participants from up to 20 countries around the world.
The connection between Les Franqueses and the Granollers Cup goes back a long way and stems from the good relations between the Les Franqueses Handball Sports Association and the organizers, Club Balonmano Granollers. As one of the official venues of the tournament, Les Franqueses has three playing courts: the indoor court of the Corró d’Avall Sports Pavilion, the covered outdoor court of the same pavilion, and, since last year, the indoor court of the Espai Can Prat.
During the four days of the tournament, more than a thousand players and companions will pass through Les Franqueses and stay in up to five schools and institutes in the municipality: specifically, at the Guerau de Liost School, Colors School, Joan Sanpera Institute, El Til·ler Institute, and Lauro Institute.
Matches started playing this Thursday from 9 in the morning and will end on Sunday at noon. At the Les Franqueses venue, teams from Chile, Norway, or Brazil, as well as Spanish teams such as Puerto Sagunto and various Catalan teams, including the host AEH Les Franqueses, are playing. The Les Franqueses venue is coordinated by members of the Les Franqueses Handball Sports Association, which is participating this year with up to 9 teams, 6 male and 3 female.
The Granollers Cup Youth Handball Tournament has 228 Catalan teams, 99 state teams, and 141 foreign teams, and will end on the afternoon of Sunday, June 30, at the Granollers Sports Palace with the finals of the 5 categories in play.
