More than 900 players from up to 36 teams from all over Catalonia competed in the tenth anniversary of the tournament organized by CB Les Franqueses.
Les Franqueses del Vallès hosted the 10th edition of the Franquibasket Tournament this weekend, which is organized annually by Club Bàsquet Les Franqueses with the collaboration of the Municipal Sports Board. This tenth anniversary was celebrated as part of the events marking Les Franqueses as the European City of Sport 2024. More than 900 players from 36 clubs across Catalonia, 20 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams, participated in this tenth edition, which took place in the Corró d’Avall and Can Prat pavilions in Les Franqueses del Vallès and the Can Bassa and CB Granollers pavilions in the Vallès capital. It was a cadet category tournament in which up to 84 games were played throughout Saturday and Sunday.
In terms of competition, there was a high level of play, with very close matches and teams displaying an attractive and entertaining style of play. The women’s final, the first to be held on Sunday at noon, featured Uni Girona Laia Palau against CENG Artesa de Segre. This final, played at the Corró d’Avall sports hall, was characterized by its competitiveness. In fact, only 2 points separated the two teams throughout the match, with the Girona team leading the scoreboard until the final stretch of the last period. It was in the final minutes of the game that Artesa de Segre managed to overturn the Girona advantage, taking the lead and ultimately winning by a tight 26 to 28.
This competitiveness was also the tone of the men’s final, which pitted Bàsquet Girona against Joventut de Badalona, two teams whose senior squads compete in the ACB league. In the men’s final, neither team was able to break away and lead the game, with the score constantly fluctuating throughout the match. It was in the final stretch when Joventut de Badalona, thanks to a three-pointer, managed to take a three-point lead that they held onto until the referee’s final whistle, despite a desperate last-second three-point attempt by Girona. Joventut de Badalona eventually won 40 to 43, thus claiming the title of champions in the men’s category.
The 10th Franquibasket Tournament in Les Franqueses, European City of Sport 2024, concluded with the trophy presentation by the sports councilor of Les Franqueses, Carlos Munzón Cruz, and the president of CB Les Franqueses, Maria Ángeles Carrasco Sola. Next weekend, September 7th and 8th, the Franquibasket Tournament for the under-14 and first-year under-14 categories will be held at the same venues.
