Les Franqueses del Vallès receives its flag as the European Sports Village 2024 in Brussels

The event marks the beginning of a series of activities and events included in the candidacy project, set to materialize throughout 2024

The Mayor of Les Franqueses, Juan Antonio Corchado, and the Sports Councilor, Carlos Munzón, have collected in Brussels, at the headquarters of the European Parliament, the flag accrediting the municipality as the European Sports Village 2024, a designation granted by the Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport (ACES Europe).

Les Franqueses officially joins the club of European towns receiving this title in 2024, an opportunity for the municipality’s mayor to “show the world our values, passion, and dedication to sports.”

During his speech, Corchado emphasized the importance of this accreditation and invited all sports entities and the public to join in this new stage. “We are aware that associations and clubs are the heart and soul of our sports life, and that’s why I invite you to join us in this exciting journey.” In this regard, he explained that the City Council aims to create a comprehensive plan that involves all local stakeholders, from sports entities to the general public, to make this opportunity a shared celebration.

Beyond its symbolism, the flag handover marks the beginning of a series of activities and events included in the candidacy project, set to materialize throughout 2024. The project aims to position Les Franqueses on the national and international map as an eminently sports-oriented city.

The planned initiatives focus on various axes, including the promotion of sports and health, with a special focus on intergenerational activities and motivation for sports practice, whether as a hobby or in competition. Inclusion and equality will be priorities, actively working through educational centers and sports entities and clubs. At the same time, the project emphasizes the importance of fundamental values such as respect, teamwork, and effort, which will be promoted through both education and sports. Additionally, active support for sports entities and clubs in organizing events throughout the year is planned.

Candidacy journey

The path to this distinction began on November 17, 2022, when the City Council of Les Franqueses formally requested ACES Europe for the opportunity to present its candidacy.

In March 2023, a delegation from ACES Europe visited the municipality to firsthand assess the local sports system and evaluate Les Franqueses’ suitability as the host of the European Sports Event 2024. The Association officially confirmed the designation on March 23, 2023.

Two accredited Catalan municipalities

The other Catalan municipality that has also received the distinction from the Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport (ACES Europe) is Manresa, recognized in the category of “European City of Sport.” This double recognition not only highlights the enthusiasm and dedication of Catalan municipalities in promoting sports but also reinforces their position as European references in promoting active and healthy living.
