More than a hundred sports events were part of this milestone’s calendar.
On December 12, Les Franqueses del Vallès will receive the title of Best European Sports Town of 2024 at the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels. The award, to be collected by Mayor Juan Antonio Corchado Ponce and Sports Councillor Carlos Munzón Cruz, marks the conclusion of the municipality’s journey as a European Sports Town.
The project will officially close on December 17, during the general meeting of the Municipal Sports Board. Representatives from all local sports organizations will gather for the closing ceremony, which will also include a review of all the activities organized over the past 12 months.
Throughout 2024, over one hundred sports and cultural events tied to the European Sports Town initiative were held, involving all of the town’s sports organizations, either as collaborators or organizers. The year began with a grand inaugural event attended by more than 800 participants, including athletes, representatives of sports and cultural organizations, and local residents. This event set the stage for a year of weekend activities featuring tournaments and exhibitions in karate, cycling, 3×3 basketball, badminton, football, handball, and many other sports.
The calendar was filled with both popular and recreational sports events as well as federated competitions. Additionally, talks, roundtables, and conferences highlighted themes like women’s sports and adapted sports. Various cultural events emphasized the values associated with sports.
Other 2024 initiatives included the creation of a commemorative mural on a wall of the Municipal Sports Complex, the establishment of a proximity sports circuit, and the launch of a new online registration system for municipal sports activities. Particular attention was given to women’s sports, with events like the Sector F Championship of Spain for Cadet Women’s Handball and the Twirling Base ‘Twirl for Fun’ Championship of Spain. Inclusive and adaptive sports were also celebrated, with highlights including the National Wheelchair Tennis Masters, Chess for Equality, and an international and national event in inclusive artistic swimming.
As 2024 comes to a close, it paves the way for 2025, which promises a new slate of sports events, with special attention to the Youth in Sports, Active Society (JESA) program aimed at promoting sports practice among the town’s youth.
